چکیده

Nanoscopic and microscopic water droplets and ice crystals embedded in liquid hydrophobic surroundings are key components of aerosols, rocks, oil fields and the human body. The chemical properties of such droplets critically depend on the interfacial structure of the water droplet. Here we report the surface structure of 200 nm-sized water droplets in mixtures of hydrophobic oils and surfactants as obtained from vibrational sum frequency scattering measurements. The interface of a water droplet shows significantly stronger hydrogen bonds than the air/water or hexane/water interface and previously reported planar liquid hydrophobic/water interfaces at room temperature. The observed spectral difference is similar to that of a planar air/water surface at a temperature that is ∼50 K lower. Supercooling the droplets to 263 K does not change the surface structure. Below the homogeneous ice nucleation temperature, a single vibrational mode is present with a similar mean hydrogen-bond strength as for a planar ice/air interface.

Computational Simulation of Surfactant-Induced Interfacial Modification of Droplet Impact and Heat Transfer

Numerical investigation of heat transfer during drop impact, spreading, recoil, and rebound/break up has been carried out for water droplets with and without surfactant additives. The numerical model is based on a finite volume formulation on a structured grid. A volume-of-fluid (VOF) technique is used to track the deforming liquid-air interface. Comparisons between the numerical results and ex...

Self-healing, Slippery Surfaces for HVAC&R Systems

Enhancing water shedding behavior on aluminum surfaces is important in the design of energy-efficient heat exchangers. In this work, a method for fabricating oil-infused aluminum surfaces for HVAC&R systems is described for the purpose of exploiting the slippery nature of such surfaces, thereby improving the overall surface wettability. A microstructured, porous aluminum fin stocks with heterog...

How faceted liquid droplets grow tails.

Liquid droplets, widely encountered in everyday life, have no flat facets. Here we show that water-dispersed oil droplets can be reversibly temperature-tuned to icosahedral and other faceted shapes, hitherto unreported for liquid droplets. These shape changes are shown to originate in the interplay between interfacial tension and the elasticity of the droplet's 2-nm-thick interfacial monolayer,...

SAMs under Water: The Impact of Ions on the Behavior of Water at Soft Hydrophobic Surfaces

Since hydrophobic surfaces are by definition “water hating”, one might assume from a simplistic perspective that solvated ions in the water would avoid a hydrophobic surface. While this might be true for idealized solid hydrophobic surfaces, 3 it is certainly not the case for solvated ions near more complex biological assemblies where ions not only approach but also transport across these bound...
